Ingredients

  • Toor dal 3/4cup
  • Rice 1 cup
  • Any veggies of your choice
  • Tomatoes
  • Onions (optional)
  • Tamarind
  • Jaggery
  • Green chillies
  • Chilli powder
  • Salt

Method

  1. Cook rice and dal (1:2 water ratio) in pressure cooker (3 whistles) or Instapot (rice setting).
  2. Take a pan and pour oil , add jeera , mustard, hing and cashews.
  3. Add tomatoes and any vegetables that you want to add. Note: Traditional recipe doesnt call for any vegetables, so adding them is optional.
  4. After the vegetable are little cooked, add tamarind water, little jaggery, green chillies, chilli powder and salt as per taste.
  5. Let the vegetables cook fully but do not make them mushy.
  6. Add masala powder mixed in water . Do not add a lot, the flavour increases after it gets cooked.
  7. Mix the cooked vegetables in cooked rice-dal mixture.
  8. Pour water and let it cook
  9. Garnish with ghee and cilantro and serve with Kara Boondi or Papad.

Notes:

  1. Do not add lot of masala powder, we recommend to use not more than 2tsp for 1cup rice. You can always add more at the end.
  2. Mix the masala in water before adding it.
